Guidelines for talking about Xcode 2.5 on this list

  • Subject: Guidelines for talking about Xcode 2.5 on this list

The guidelines:

1. Since we have released the Xcode 2.5 seed to all ADC members, it's okay to talk about Xcode 2.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger).

2. Since Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has not been released publicly, it is NOT okay to talk about Xcode 2.5 on Leopard on this public mailing list.

3. While we talk about "coexistence of developer tools" or "side-by- side installations" in the About Xcode Tools document and seed notes, Coexistence is a feature of Leopard, so in-depth discussions of coexistence, and what it means for the Xcode 3.0 developer tools (and future versions), is outside the scope of this public mailing list and NOT okay to talk about on this list.

A short comment about Xcode 2.5 and why it exists.

As the seed notes and About Xcode Tools document states (or should state), the primary "change" of the Xcode 2.5 developer tools compared to the Xcode 2.4.1 developer tools is to support the "coexistence" of Xcode 2.5 and Xcode 3.0 on a Leopard system. On Tiger, the biggest change you'll see in Xcode 2.5 to provide this support is a restructuring of the /Developer folder to be more self contained. There are also some minor improvements that fell out of this (the most notable is dsymutil performance improvements when generating dSYM files).

Finally some reminders:

1. The Xcode 2.5 seed is not a GM version of the Xcode developer tools and should not be used to produce GM quality software that you will ship to others (you all know the drill, see the license for specifics).

2. This list is NOT a replacement or alternative to filing bugs at bugreporter.apple.com. It's okay to discuss issues that you've found, but don't expect that a post here will translate into the bug or issue getting looked at (let alone fixed) by Apple engineers.

3. Since it is okay to talk about Xcode 2.5 (an unreleased product) hosted on Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger), it is even more important that you make it clear what version of Xcode you are referring to when asking questions or discussing Xcode.
