Breakpoints suddenly don't work

I see that others had this problem a year or so ago. Suddenly, I have
lost the ability to break at breakpoints. I've spent a day or more trying
to find out if there is a something like a global setting I might have
inadvertently changed. I've even rebooted the machine. I'm running a 1.25
GHz G4 PB, 10.4.8, latest released tools, and have not changed directories
or anything mentioned in the archives. Screen drawing proves that the code
with the breakpoints is actually executing. I did do the most recent
security update a few days ago. :-(
Any ideas?
