I'm sure there are people who don't know that "Command key"
refers to
the one with ? (place of interest sign character) on it, and
probably at least as many who don't know realize that ? (option key
character) in a menu represents the Option key.
The reason they removed the names is that it was too expensive to
have a
different keyboard for each language that is supported.
Who removed the names? I see them on my MacBook Pro keys.
It would be a shame if they reduced the usability of keyboards for
such a small amount of savings given the volume of keyboards
produced. It would be better IMO to at least provide keyboards in
languages with the largest markets where the volume of sales would
make the extra cost insignificant.
Any language where the market is too small to justify that is also a
language where the amount of software available in that language is
so limited that speakers of that language will almost certainly have
to resort to using some software in another language such as English,
in which case the English terms could still be useful. I find that a
lot of my users whose native language is not English still have at
least some competency in English, usually much more than would be
necessary to be able to benefit from the English words for those four
terms. (In many cases their English is so good I wonder if it's even
justified to pay a translator to provide my product in their language.)
