I certainly don't see it as the fault of OS X -- rather a build script and a user base which are overwhelmingly linux/win32. There's no more than a handful of Mac folks on the ode lists ( myself being one ), and I'm not experienced enough -- thank heaven -- with automake and friends to fix the issue in the build itself. I prefer writing code ;)
I'll just do my best to get it building on my old powerbook. lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, On Jan 24, 2007, at 3:19 PM, Alexander v. Below wrote:

So local cross compiling is appealing, obviously. Any ideas?
I share your pain, but this is not a problem of OS X per se, but of the weird build systems some projects come with
In the end, I might just try to build this on a PPC, and lipo that output with the local build
Given that I have easy access to x86 and PPC machines, that is something I resort to most of the time -- often that seems to be a better use of my time than changing the build setup.
I am sure it is possible to build any project universal. Technically, that should not be an issue. But given the oddities some people but into their makefiles, it can be a bit of work
