--arch option not supported in this gdb

I'm using Xcode 2.5. The code compiles and runs fine except when I try to debug. Then I get an 'Error Starting Executable' dialog with this info:

Check its arguments and the debugger console. Unable to find Mach task port for process-id 26974: (os/kern) failure (0x5).

The I get a second dialog informing me that Bash has crashed with a SIGTRAP. The console has the arch error.

So far I can't find anything on the Net or in archives. Any help would be appreciated.
