Not really -- for a new project there are typically only a handful
of source files.
Defaulting to Release doesn't add *that* much time to compilation
(especially not for Cocoa apps -- ObjC compiles fast), doesn't
impact debugging *that* badly while the code is simple, and means
that the app is reasonably sized and "just works" when drag-n-
dropped somewhere else.

I actually agree with you, Fritz.
But...
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The default is what it is and
whatever it is, about 40% of the population will pipe up and complain
about it or the other 40% will pipe and and agree. The remaining 20%
don't care.
Of course, bugs are filed against things that people don't like and,
thus, there are a handful of features for which every release has a
steady stream of "I don't like that way".
Feel free to file bugs against this. If enough people do, it'll
change the other way and then we'll see the slew of "I just sent my
boss/friend/coworker/enemy my app and it doesn't launch / is too big"
complaints. :)
