On the plus side of all this, this is a feature that is not likely to
appear in the System Preferences. Nor should it really IMHO. I don't
think that is the place for that kind of functionality as it will just
confuse 99% of the people, who are the same people that will never use
it. But just providing the ability to set in a .plist somewhere (that
somebody can write an application for) the ability to create a more
customizable exclude list is pretty easy to do.
I discovered that there is a file (sorry I forget where atm) full of
paths to exclude if, on the Leopard server side, the "exclude system
files" box is checked. It's big. Like 100K big if memory serves.
And we have seen that they already have code in place to be able to
just quickly drag a folder into the exclude list. So it wouldn't take
much to put a behind the scenes regexp include/exclude list that nerds
like us can get to. :) Or more practically for people running an IT
department to be able to get to (and also set on the server side). I
like the idea of being able to exclude peoples Music folders
globally. I got 60 users with an average of about 18GB each of
music. 90% of which is on at least another 15 computers, and even
then they can re-import or re-download from the music store. That is
a lot of saved space on the backup server.
Heres hoping Apple decides this is a simple enough and important
enough thing to add in a .x release.
