Unlikely, at least for features breaking code backwards compatibility. Some GNUsteppers still use gcc 2.x.

3. Can you supply me any pointers in which objective-C was used
   to render over the wire?

As GNUstep uses X11 in most configurations, this is pretty standard. Independant of wether you use Obj-C, plain C or other languages to feed X11, though.
