One thing I'll point out again -- I know I do this a lot -- is that
"duplicate" does not mean "not to be fixed" and that the bug
reporter is in no way, shape or form a black hole. "Duplicate"
means there is already a case in Apple's tracking system that
covers the issue. I know I say this a lot, too, but: Don't let a
resolution of "duplicate" keep you from filing bugs. Information
from duplicates can be *critical* to actually resolving a bug; one
duplicate with a reproducible case, or that occurs in a slightly
different but easier-to-investigate case can make all the difference.
I have to disagree here.
As far as a developer is concerned, "Duplicate" IS a black hole.
If I file a bug #8675309 (say) and it gets closed as a "duplicate of
bug #3141592", then how can I find out what the resolution of the
bug is? Remember the bug? The _reason_ for filing the bug report?
* Was it fixed in 10.4.8 (say)? in Leopard?
* Was it marked as "works as designed"?
* Was it marked as "will not fix"?
There's no official way to find out.
ADC sends courtesy emails out to originators of duplicate bugs when
the original is fixed.
