Alternatively, you can use the Grab application (in Utilities folder), which
saves screen captures to TIFF files.

It's possible to edit a user defaults setting, so that the command-shift-4
action saves screen captures into your desired format (png, gif, jpeg,
tiff).  But I can't recall which preference file that setting is in.
