Thanks for your response, Chris.

A followup.  What would you think about using a "screen scraping" technique to keep an auxiliary editor in synch with the built-in editor.  There is no html to read, but a person could filter the messages that go to the built-in editor, and send the built-in editor messages to simulate user actions that originally happened to the auxiliary editor.  The aux. editor could sacrifice a little one-inch square in the corner for the built-in editor.
