Detached editor window & opening files

When I have the code editor detached, how do I get files I select to open in the same edit window? When I double click on a file, it opens in a new window. I'd like to have it open in the same window, where I can select the displayed file with the control in the upper left had, as you can when the edit window is part of the main XCode window.
