it does? i still get errors when i, say, use "for (int i = 0;...)" without manually specifying C99 project options. what am i missing?

Did you create a new project? Xcode's not going to mess with the build settings of any existing projects!
I've created a few new projects lately and can confirm that they got C99 by default.

What kind of project?
