Once you've downloaded and installed a doc set, you can copy that
doc set to another Mac without a problem.
Here's my previous question:
"I went to download the Core Reference Guide. Part way through, I
get an alert, something like "running low on disk space". So I
cancel shuffle off an iphone SDK and restart. Now I've got 2.1 Gigs
free. I try again. Same message, reporting the same problem. So how
much disk space do I need to get the download to take?"
Here's an alternate way to download doc updates:

I just tried this out and the download for Core Reference docs is a
xar file under 300MB. Pacifist tells me this expands to a docset
bundle that's under 900MB. Maybe the decompression process needs
some scratch space. Maybe you could free up a few more megabytes by
deleting the build directories from your Xcode projects.
Thanks Andy,
The scratch space was it exactly. I upped the free space to 2.5 Gigs
and the Core Reference Library came through. I'll go through a similar
process for the Developer Tools Reference set.
