I may need to look into that.  I'd probably need to store the original
templates somewhere too, so if they change (or if new ones are added), I
know both that it happened, and I have a chance to solve it.

One possible solution. I have a Xcode project template for building
static BSD libraries. It's actually a dummy project that is part of my
source code tree and a script that knows how to convert the project to a
template. That makes it fairly easy to install the template when needed.
(As long as the install-to location doesn't move around too
often!)
