So how can I have more than one main.cpp in a project, one for each executable I want to produce?

You realize it doesn't have to be called "main.cpp", right? The compiler doesn't care what your source files are called. You could name them "Tool1.cpp", "Tool2.cpp", etc. Just enable one and only one of them in each target.
