Xcode 3.1 (beta): 'Save' & 'Save As' menu items grayed out

Greetings:
   I'm using Xcode 3.1 (beta) {IDE v 1057.0}.  All the 'Save' menu items are grayed-out (non-functional).
I've created a New Project, but can't use the Save.  That includes just a virgin save without building: I can't even save
the generic project framework.

All the build directories are located user-available (local).

What's the remedy here?
