Console application useless for debugging - slow and syslogd crashes

Please direct me to the appropriate list if this isn't appropriate..
I'm trying to debug an application which is initiated by selecting a control file (via the openFile delegate method of NSApplication). Starting this way deprives me of the debug console, so I'm dependent on the Console application to see the output from the NSLog statements I've injected. However. the Console application is now almost unusable because
1) frequent crashes (of syslogd) with duplication of output- i've forwarded some of the crash reports to Apple.
2) it is slower than molasses in January- It will take a good 10 seconds to display a new line, and it can get over 5 to 8 minutes behind if I repeatedly launch an application with 10 to 20 NSLog's in it.
Has anyone else seen this misbehavior?
