I'd like to embed the XQuery.framework from Mac OS X 10.5.7 in my application

Apple Legal won't allow that, I'm afraid (you're not allowed to distribute parts of Mac OS X yourself).

I'm wondering why when I call -[NSXMLNode objectsForXQuery:error:] it doesn't call out to the corresponding functions in the XQuery.framework unless it's been loaded from /System/Library/ PrivateFrameworks?

Probably because of the install name (google install_name_tool)
