Add a tool target, add an executable?

I feel I should know this, but maybe I'm having a slow day.

Xcode 3.1.3, iPhone 3.0 app project. I add a target Mac OS X > Cocoa > Shell Tool. I make the adjustments to the Leopard SDK. I set the ad- hoc SDK to Leopard. The target builds fine. It runs well from the command line.

When I try to debug it, I find the active executable is still the iPhone app. In fact there is no executable for the shell tool. I could create a custom executable, but that ties me to the path to my custom build folder on the machine I'm running on, and it's invalid if I change build configurations.

How do I get a workable executable pointed, portably, at my build product?
