Can you give some examples of what types of you're thinking of?

I cannot go into details on this public list, but there may be situations where:

(1) It would not be a good idea if certain sensitive information contained in the name or contents of a control gets spoken out loud. I would imagine that people with visual impairments but not fully blind might prefer to see certain information in large print rather then have everyone nearby hear it even though they use spoken interface for other things.

(2) An assistive technology application may have its own kind of spoken interface (perhaps multilingual) and it might get really confusing for the user to hear the same text getting spoken multiple times (and perhaps in multiple languages).

Without having tried Spoken Interface and having seen what it is like it is of course difficult for me to assess the degree to which the issues mentioned above are going to be a problem for dedicated assistive technology software. I am just saying that having a facility to turn spoken interface off just for certain user interface elements may in some cases provide a better user experience or be the right thing to do. I think it is safer to build in the option to allow it to be turned off for certain user interface elements than wait until users are experiencing problems. I just wanted to signal potential problems and hope Apple's development team will take this aspect along.

Will there be a way for a developer to turn of the speaking of a
specific interface element, without having to turn off the
accessibility for that element as a whole. Sometimes there are
reasons why something should not be spoken.
