Hello,
Im not a developer but after many conversations with Apple this seems to be the only resource they know of that can help me.
I am a 22 year vet of Apple computers. Encouraged by the accesability functions in Panther, I am currently doing some volunteer work with the blind. For the most part the new OS is a great start to helping these people but there are some issues with which I am having a great deal of trouble.
I have 3 basic questions
1. What resources are out there to help me help these people? Any kind of webpages or books or forums or mailinglists or info that pertains to actual real world implementation of the Mac under OSX for the blind would be great. I cant seem to find anything on the web.
and some specific issues
2. How do you get osx to speak the full text in an alert. Speaking alerts is great but it only speaks the type of alert, not the actual alert message. For example, a _javascript_ alert would be followed by the voice synthesizer saying "Pardon me, _javascript_ error" and thats it. The voice does not speak the text within that alert box. I can use the mouse and highlight that text and then have the mac speak the text but a blind person cant highlight (or use the mouse in anyway) I tried tabbing to the text portion of the alert and using the arrow keys, I tried Cmd+A and various other keyboard commands but nothing gets me into the text portion of an alert.
3. How do you name a file? This seems really easy but its extremely difficult without a mouse. The navigation of the mac hierarchy is completely accesible via the keyboard and spoken commands but there is no way to instruct the mac to click an item (in this case the name of a selected file) I tried to get around this by selecting a file than using the spoken command "file menu - get info" This will get you to the get info window and you can tab to the Name and Extension field but unless you click that arrow, you dont have access to the field required to actually change the name.
4. Is there anyplace that lists all the active keyboard commands in the mac osx?
Im open to any ideas or workarounds even if a particular reply does not have the exact answer.
Thanks for your help
Andy
