Java UI widgets not accessible

It looks as though Java has some accessibility "holes" for certain UI
elements, in that those elements are not visible to the AX
accessibility calls.
I don't do Java development but I'm trying to help out someone who is,
and whose Java app doesn't work with my accessibility app. Any tips I
could pass along would help.
Example: Run the Java SwingSet2 demo by entering this at the command line:
java -jar /Developer/Examples/Java/JFC/SwingSet2/SwingSet2.jar
Then run Accessibility Inspector.
In the SwingSet demo, bring up the ComboBox demo pane. The Java combo
boxes in the left side of the window are invisible to Accessibility
Inspector. The same thing happens with the table demo pane-- the
table is not accessible.
I believe these are just standard Java UI elements, so I'm guessing I
need to file a bug about this and hope for the best. In the meantime
though, is there any kind of work-around I can suggest?
