Well, the whole issue of authentication was a big red herring. Inserting TextEdit's PID obtained from running "ps -ael" from the Terminal worked. So I looked again at my code to get the PID (NSWorkspace based) and I was casting the NSNumber to a pid_t instead of the integerValue of the NSNumber. Sigh. Real noobie behavior.

I would have thought AXUIElementCreateApplication() would return nil or something with a bad process ID, bug obviously it doesn't - the return value always has the appearance of something real.
