The idea to use external gear has me wondering if a custom device could be designed that simply routes the device’s output back to the input, so you would be able to record it cleanly.
Granted this would probably require custom hardware development, but since you asked for any ideas :) I would envision such a thing in the form of a very small fob that plugs into the headphone jack (like a Square fob but probably even smaller.
