Change the VoiceOver message used for iOS app icon badge counts?

Hello all,

In one of our iOS apps, we badge the app icon. When VoiceOver selects our badged app icon it reads “<n> new items”. In our app, the badge doesn’t mean “new”. Is there a way to change the badge label that VoiceOver uses?
