If you create an NSSearchField and give its cell a searchMenuTemplate, the magnifying glass will gain a triangle and you will be able to click the button to get a popup menu. If you interact with the search field with VO and try to reach the button, though, you won’t be able to. Any text in the field appears, and the cancel button appears when it’s visible. But not the searchButtonCell.
However, if you create an NSButtonCell in code and set it as the searchButtonCell, then you’ll be able to reach it with VO. Of course, you won’t get the benefit of the default magnifying-glass-and-menu-arrow icon.
I’m trying to make sure this is a bug/oversight and I’m not just missing something. If anyone knows why this button seems to be inaccessible to VO by default, I’d love to know. Maybe there’s a VO command I don’t know about that interacts with the button. (Not VO-Shift-M, though, which opens the normal text context menu.)
Thanks in advance,
-Nick
