Dismissing popovers and popups by tapping outside of the container

Hi.
If you use a popover view on the iPad, VoiceOver automatically provides an invisible element to allow VoiceOver users tap outside of the popover area to dismiss it.
Is the same affordance available for similar views on the iPhone? By "similar" I mean navigation drawers and other views that are not popovers but obscure parts of the screen.

If no method currently exists, what would be the easiest way to implement the behavior similar to the one I described above?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Best,
Victor
