With VoiceOver on iOS, is there a built-in control for multi-line text
that allows the following to occur? I would like accessibility focus to
be preserved for the user after a continuous read (e.g., after a two
finger downward swipe for continuous reading, followed by a two finger
single tap to pause).
For comparison, when using a screen reader in a desktop app with
built-in controls, the expectation of the user is that focus will be
preserved on the last word heard after a continuous read. This enables
the user to examine in detail, for meaning or spelling, text in the
immediate vicinity of what was last heard before the continuous read was
paused.
For example, the user might perform granular reading by character, word,
or line after pausing the continuous read. Although the option is
available, the user typically does not want to have to re-read much text
that has already been heard before performing such granular reading.
With various article or book reading apps that I have tried on iOS,
however, focus is never preserved at the granular level of the word last
heard in a continuous read. Most apps seem to preserve focus at the
level of a paragraph or even larger unit of the text last heard, thus
requiring significant re-reading to return to the point of intended
scrutiny. This leads me to wonder whether the iOS accessibility API
even permits focus preservation at the word level.
In iOS, what combination of text-based control and event monitoring
would facilitate the most granular level of focus preservation after
continuous reading?
Jamal
