All that blab and no answer. Aren't I helpful? 8)

Thanks for the detail! While it looks like I will not be able to make life as transparently as easy as possible for our customers installing our product by performing the operation for them, the Gestalt information did pay dividends. Stuffit Installermaker can be configured to detect Gestalt conditions, so using your information I detect it and throw up a warning dialog box that they must perform this manually. Not real user friendly, but at least I launch the control panel for 'em (and it doesn't appear unless they have it turned on).

I had also thought of hacking/overwriting the preference file, but I'm already pushing the limit on a 1.4 MB floppy (not a lot of room for additional lines of code), pushing a deadline -- so there's not a lot of time and space to write code that actually alters the preferences file, and just overwriting it with the one from my Mac seems risky -- I'd be nuking their other settings like key repeat rate and Keyboard.

Thanks bunches! Looks like the programer(s) that were responsible for upgrading the keyboard control panel missed upgrading the Keyboard Addition Scripting Additions to include hooks for the F-key setup -- you can change just about everything else though the Scripting Addition. That's why I love the About Box for control panels like 'Appearances' -- I get to see the names of the folks who designed it, and can (possibly) look them up ;-)

Once again, Thanks!
