Let's just turn word wrap off in our mailers, wrap our comments, and leave the

script part unwrapped with the continuation characters removed (at least until

the list is fixed)? I note the list server does not add line wraps.

It seems you're not aware that most email software can't turn off
hard-wrapping in sending plain text. It's actually an internet standard
protocol that plain text should hard-wrap, so email clients that adhere to
the proper standard (such as OE and Entourage) can't do it. Email clients
that have format=flowed (only Eudora, I believe) can do this without
breaking standards, but only clients also with format=flowed can read it
(again, only Eudora), There are other email clients which don't mind
breaking the standards (like yours) and then we can all see the soft-wrapped
lines. Sending in HTML also allows softwrapping, but a lot of people object
to HTML (especially if they are using Claris Emailer, which can't read it,
and get tags-garbage.)
So, there's really no solution until everyone has either format=flowed or
breaks internet standards, or until people eventually accept HTML. In the
meantime, we have to make do.
Since the MacScrpt server has no trouble with chevrons or even the option-L
symbol (I think), it's really too bad that no one at Apple considered the
ASCII-8 character question before getting the new server fro their mailing
lists.
