Get global FMP field when no records exist

FileMaker 4 allows a global field to be set to some value even when
no records exist (using a FileMaker script). So far, I have been
unable to get that value with an AppleScript unless at least 1 record
exists. Anyone know a sneaky undocumented way to get the global's
value when there are no records present? I don't want the user to end
up with a blank record.
