Sally,
I just wanted to welcome you. Just so you know AppleScript is meant to
access a application unlike that of a user via. clicking and typing the
interface. It work with Apple Events that are like messages that control the
application(when you open a folder an Apple Event occurred). The whole point
of AppleScript is to intelligently automate the repetitive things a users
does most all the way to automate an entire publishing workflow.
Apple Events themselves are quick because you tell the application directly.
Controlling the interface was once a limitation of AppleScript but with
third party products you can do just that. It is slower and some times not
as reliable but just as effective. I prefer Quickeys and Prefab Player to do
what AppleScript directly cannot do.
I have not worked with Speech Recognition but have seen some cool things
come from it. I have a friend that creates a QuarkXPress document and set
it's preferences all thru voice commands. Very Cool.
Good luck and may AppleScript bring you the satisfaction that it does me.
