For much the same purpose I use the shareware control panel TypeIt4Me.
The advantage of TypeIt4Me is that it translates abbreviations into
their full text and you can store as many of them as you want.
For instance, when I type "atid" followed by a space or return I get:
set {oldDelims, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's
text item delimiters, ""}
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldDelims
