I agree about Cal's friendliness. He began his helpfulness before I had
made the purchase (I had the money already for another editor, but had to
wait a couple weeks longer to meet the price of Scripter) When I first
got Scripter, he personally went out of his way to make sure that I was
enjoying the purchase. For several years, he emailed me on a regular
basis to see if I had any questions or problems. I've even talked to him
on the phone a few times. Of all the software I've purchased, no other
company has ever done that. Scripter had so many features that it made my
scripting much easier even before I began really delving into all the
options that are available. Cal also pointed me to other Scripter users
who were also very helpful. Ed Stockly was a tremendous inspiration
because he kept exposing features that I hadn't tapped yet - and I really
was reading the manual!
Scripter has a few limitations but I have never once regretted my
purchase. The overall experience with Scripter has been very positive and
I don't mind sharing that with others. While the 32k limitation seemed a
major roadblock for some, it has always been very trivial to me. Besides,
I wouldn't bet any other company would be as responsive and supportive.
I've talked with Cal enough to know that he has a very busy life and
still manages to go out of his way as he did with me, so that has given
me a tremendous respect for him. When he posts to the list, I pay
attention and have changed my scripting style because of tips or
suggestions he has made. Although I was very shocked that he still uses
Apple's Script Editor regularly. Because of this I tried to use it once
in a while, but it was much too difficult. When I go play on the display
Macs at the local stores, I usually will try to print out some snippets
that I composed at home first because even those few short minutes are a
challenge using Script Editor.
Someday, I'll make it to MacWorld and get to meet him and some of the
other people I've met on these lists over the years. That's been a
goal/dream for several years because I've belonged to the scripting
mailing lists longer than any other forum and unlike other lists, have
never unsubscribed. I like the different personalities, helpfulness and
sense of humor of the people I've met. Even the debates and minor wars
have been worth following every thread.
