They aren't alert boxes, or dialogs. They are notifications. Notifications
are significantly different than dialogs and use the Notification Manager
(and indirectly the Dialog Manager) to get their job done. Notifications
are meant to be used to convey a message to the user while the user is away
from your application (for example, when the user is in the Finder and an
application needs to notify the user that an operation is complete).
It was only recently that notification dialogs appeared any different than
standard dialogs. In Mac OS 8 and earlier releases, notifications looked
very similar to dialogs. Now they have a different appearance.
I suspect Apple hasn't provided built-in scriptability for the Notification
Manager for the same reason Apple has not provided more flexible and
extensible Dialog Manager support. ;)
Luckily, we have Dialog Director and Akua Sweets to fill the gaps. :)
