You are on the right track.

I highly recommend Anarchie (now known as Interarchy). It's the fastest,
most robust, and most developed/maintained FTP client available for Mac
today. And Interarchy's scripting support is great. Here's a simple script
to download a file or directory using Interarchy:

Just an FYI to everyone that Fetch is actually being updated for the first time in I don't know how long. It's even native carbon for OS X.
