Follow-up:
It appears that it will work if sent with CR/LF line endings and encoded
in MIME/base 64. (It also works encoded AppleDouble but the file name gets
lost. In uuencode, the text gets garbled).
Sorry to trouble everyone, although I'd still be interested in any replies
or reflections.
