It's a long (at least when the list is made into an Apple Event Manager
list). And in that context, I don't recall seeing any bits of the long
used for other purposes.

But I'd be wary of anything larger than 2^31, given the Pascal heritage in
the Mac ROMs.

It doesn't matter much yet, since the list must fit into memory, whether
the potentially negative counts work or not. [It's possible that it can be
made to matter by devoting enough disk space to swap in Mac OS X.]
