sorry about the previous message. finger slipped.
os 8.6 and i didn't install applescript separately so i guess it's the version that came with it. how would the version influence things?

Very curious. I tried your script, or as close as I could make it and have it
run, and it worked as I'd expect -- "exit repeat" dropped out of the loop. I
assume you can still reproduce this? What version of AppleScript/Mac OS are you
using?
