The Desktop as presented on screen by the Finder has contents which are the
union of the Desktop Folders found on each mounted volume (this becomes
more obvious if there is more than one mounted volume). It also becomes a
little visible when you arrange to have files of the same name in each of
the Desktop Folders whose contents currently make up the visible Desktop.
We discussed on the list (or maybe the other list) a while back whether
Folder Actions Plus can permit actions to be attached to each of those
actual Desktop Folders...but since I had no intention of doing so I didn't
pay any attention.
Note that the Trash is much the same sort of thing.
