kat,
I was, as you probably will recall, a devout Emailer user. I felt much as
you do, and had scads of scripts for Emailer. I've converted all the ones I
still need, first to Outlook Express and now to Entourage (well, that
conversion is still in progress; I do 'em as I need 'em). The conversion
was, in nearly every case, simple. Often, all it took was changing the
"tell" statement.
I decided to experiment with OE when v5.0 came out. The earlier versions
were not sufficiently mature to tempt me away from Emailer. But I found that
OE, and now Entourage, offered enough new features to win my allegiance.
I still think Emailer was sleek and svelte when compared to OE and
Entourage. I'm dubious that the growth in memory usage is really all
efficient use of memory caused by the addition of new features; I think some
of it is bloat and simply lack of concern about wasting memory. I wish I did
not feel I need to allocate 15 megs to Entourage to avoid crashes. Yet, when
I do give it that memory (and memory these days is really cheap, so I find
my complaints carry less weight), it runs like a champ.
And the scripting support (and the enthusiasm of users writing scripts) is
reminiscent of Emailer's heyday. Give it a try some time, see what you
think. Try to convert some of your favorite scripts. I think you'll find it
a comfortable environment.
