A couple of things...

1) Download the most recently updated Help Center modules from the Apple
website. There's good info included about this very problem. Basically,
you have to create the printer first, THEN set the PPD.

2) Search the list archives for info on increasing the memory allocation for
Desktop Printer Manager. That will help.
