I wonder if

System version of (get machine environment) -- Jon's Commands

includes any localization characters or words, which you could decipher if
necessary. The only thing that makes me doubt if this in fact works (I can't
test with my US version) is that the result is supposed to be 'string' but
in fact it's 'real' - a number. So Jon may just be using that hex-to-decimal
formula for sysv, which probably wouldn't give localizations.

Eric Grant once sent MacScrpt or this list a full list of certain system
resource codes for the Date & Time Control panel which specified which
localized language was being used for the date string. Perhaps Eric can help
here.
