In my experience[*] you can use jumpers on the hard disk to have it simply
not spin up when you boot the Mac. That seems like a more useful approach -
with the added bonus of not having the noise of the disk if you're not going
to use it anyway.
[*] My experience with this applies to SCSI disks only. Perhaps it's
different with IDE disks?
