There are a couple of shareware applications that will tell you such things,
but they tend to be somewhat out of date. The authoritative list of Mac OS
error codes is in the MacErrors.h file in the Universal Interfaces. It's
designed for use by C programmers, but it's not too difficult to read even if
you don't know C. I've put a copy in my iDisk

http://homepage.mac.com/c.nebel>. Applications can and do make up their own
error codes, so you're not guaranteed to find an answer there, but it should
get you quite a ways.
