I'm using AS 1.4.3. Is that really ancient?

As Jeff said, it is not really ancient, but it is, apparently, incapable of handling .app applications.
However, you also reported a way around it by using FBuddy.
By the way, Smile 1.7.5 does not see .app applications as well.
