Under OSX you can you MySQL but I'd be surprised if was supported in any
meanignful way by Applescript. Normally it would be controlled by the
unix languages, PHP, Perl etc.
The most obvious answer to your question would be FileMaker Pro. It is
fine for smallish (up to maybe 20 user) installations and is highly
scriptable. It also has some well established solutions for working with
Quark.
It is also well suited to beginner db 'developers' as it's very easy to
use. Feel free to contact me off list if you need more information (we
use an FMP/Quark production system here)
For larger situations you might look at 4D which has an extensive
programming language but is much more difficult to learn than 4D.
