You can tell the finder to get the container of the file,
set myFile to alias "Disk:folder:file"
tell app "Finder" to get container of myFile
--> result: folder "folder" of disk "Disk" (which can be coerced into an
alias if that's what you want).
or you can use the Scripting Addition "Sigma's Coercions" to "coerce the file
into a container" (that is,
file "Disk:folder:file" as container
--> result: file "Disk:folder:"
