Thanks for trying, but...

Both of those lines of code result in exactly the same thing. The
variable "theFile" will contain an alias reference since the contents of
each list item is an alias reference. Just on the off chance that it
would make a difference I gave it a try. The results were
disappointingly the same.

The weirdness is that it works perfectly when run from Script Editor but
not when it's run as a droplet. I hope someone can come up with an
answer. I've even tried eliminating all but the most basic scripting
additions without any change in the script's behavior.
